Double Down Stud

Double Down Stud is one variation of the large family of stud poker games. These are quite different than those like Texas Holdem, and are characterized by a mixture of cards played face down and face up. Stud poker games became famous at the time of the American Civil War, and maintain their popularity today as traditional card games as well as online card games played on the internet. There are several dozen stud poker varieties with some of the more popular being Mississippi Stud, Mexican Stud, Blind Stud and Razz. Stud poker games can use five card hands, but the seven card stud format is becoming increasingly popular.

Double Down Stud begins with a deal of one card face up to each player. This is followed by a further three community cards also played value showing. Finally, one further community card is played face down. Having paid an initial ante, each player then has the opportunity of doubling up on their initial bet. Once bets have been placed, the dealer will then turn over the final card, at which point winners will be paid out according to a pre-determined payment schedule.

One piece of poker trivia - the face down card in stud poker is called the "hole", thus giving meaning to the common English phrase, having an "ace in the hole".

Having been played for the last 150 years, stud poker in all its variety seems likely to continue in popularity with its transformation to online and video poker websites. Players can take on computer opponents, or play against other live players situated anywhere in the world. Online tournaments are also becoming increasingly widespread. Double Down Stud poker is a fast game without the normal revolving rounds of betting common to regular poker, and as such lends itself well to fast computer simulation game play.
